Breeder/Owner: Jessica Carlson Click here to view Tristyn's pedigree Tristyn was --and continues to be-- the surprise from Taryn's litter by NFC/FC/AFC Shambo's Dark Shadow. I knew Shadow carried the tri-color gene, but wasn't really expecting to get them in Taryn's litter (she actually had two, a tri boy didn't make it). She has a lot of white on the right side of her face, so when she was born it looked like she was liver on one side and tri on the other! Her orange markings came in enough to show she is in fact properly marked. But, no one picked my tri girl, so she stayed with me and slowly earned her way to a permanent spot in the gang. Tristyn turned out to be an outstanding show dog who kept me on my toes as I learned what it's like to show a tri-color Brittany (the color is "allowed but not preferred"). She won at her first show, and with her solid structure and flowing side gait, finished her show title with 4 majors from the Bred by Exhibitor class. Tristyn was slow to start in the field; she loved to point birds, but didn't run as much as her littermates. So while they went on the field trial circuit as puppies, Tristyn spent a spring season hunting with a friend in Idaho. This turned out to be the making of Tristyn, as she not only blossomed into a fantastic bird dog who can find and point birds like you wouldn't believe, she also discovered that she can RUN! She earned her Derby points in short order, and is now a strong adult contender. She qualified for the 2011 National Championship and had her first run there the same year her mother Taryn had her last. 2012 began well as Tristyn qualified early in the spring for the National Open & Amateur Championships, and with several great performances in a row, completed her Dual Championship title in April! She finished in grand style by winning the Nebraska Brittany Championship, 4 years after Taryn won it while 5 she was weeks pregnant with Tristyn. Tristyn is now the breed's first and only tri-color Dual Champion. Tristyn was a busy girl in 2013. She earned her first win in January, completed her NFC qualification in February and followed that up with a win of the Texas Open Championship (just like mom, again)! She was bred to DC Kinwashkly Dirty Ned Pepper the same day and then 4 weeks later, Tristyn was handled for the first time in an Amateur All Age stake by friend Richard Beaver, winning the stake to qualify for the 2013 NAFC too! Click here for details on her litter of 4 tri-color puppies by Ned. Two of those pups have made their debut in competition, with Rusty Ridge Pepper Rey Ann proving herself a precocious pup, placing in her very first trial at 6 months and 2 days old, then going on to win 4 stakes in a row! Pepper also won her Derby points and was Runner-Up in the Texas Derby Classic at just 9 months old, then won the 1-hour Victoire Nationale Derby Championship in 2015! Pepper Ann is already placing in All Age stakes as a young 2 year old. Her brother SoCo (Triple Shot of Southern Comfort) also has multiple placements and is now running in Gun Dog stakes. Watch for more from these two in the future! Tristyn finished up the year by repeating Taryn's wins once again, with a third 1st Place win of the Field Trial Bitch class at the ABC National Specialty Show. She even made it through a few rounds of "cuts" in Best of Breed - another first for a tri-color! Tristyn was back on the field trial circuit in 2014, and qualified for the nationals with a Runner-Up win at the Texas Open Championship. We repeated the breeding to DC Kinwashkly Dirty Ned Pepper in February. While about 4 weeks pregnant with this litter, Tristyn claimed another place in history as the 2014 US Open Brittany Championship winner! She wrapped up the season by finishing her AFC title the following weekend. Thanks to Richard Beaver and Harlan Gerardy for helping with that by handling Tristyn to her last two amateur wins! On April 6 she gave birth to 6 puppies by Ned (this time only one tri-color). Two of these now have field and/or show points, with the star being our own Shadow's Peppermint Twist. Tristyn was back in action in the fall with her 5th hour stake placement in September, and made a strong showing at the ABC National Championship in November. In 2015 Tristyn continued giving us her all and qualified for both the National Open and Amateur Field Championships. Tragically on October 15, 2015 my trailer caught on fire while I was driving on the highway, and I was burned while trying to rescue the dogs from the back of my trailer. Tristyn, her brother Tripp, and a youngster out of Tango did not escape the fire. We are devastated at their loss. My only consolation is that we have Tristyn's next generation to carry on for us, and I look forward to their future.
Tristyn spent the spring
of '09 learning about wild birds in Idaho. Below she is naturally honoring her hunting buddy Dee. |
